Reno is done being the biggest little punchline. Its websites should be too.

Made by Plume is a design studio based in Reno. Not a franchise territory, not an outsourced production line. We build websites here because we live here, eat here, and watch which rooms fill up and why.

01The Market

A city rewriting its own story deserves better than templates

Reno is in the middle of the most interesting reinvention of any city in the American West. Midtown turned a neglected stretch of Virginia Street into a real dining and nightlife district. The Riverwalk gave the Truckee River frontage evening foot traffic that didn't exist here fifteen years ago. The casino core still anchors the visitor economy, from The Row to the Grand Sierra, Atlantis, and Peppermill, while Tahoe tourism and a wave of new residents keep pushing restaurants, bars, and boutique concepts into neighborhoods that used to be parking lots.

The reinvention left a gap. The city's food and hospitality scene has leveled up dramatically, but most Reno business websites still look like they were bought from a directory in 2016. Walk through Midtown and you'll pass rooms with obvious design ambition: considered interiors, serious menus, owners who sweat the details. Look those same rooms up on your phone and you find a stock template with an hours widget. Block after block, the digital experience undersells the physical one.

That gap is the opportunity. When your competitors present themselves generically, a website with real design intent tells guests what tier of business you are before they ever walk in. Reno runs on word of mouth, and the first act of word of mouth in 2026 is somebody texting your link.

A well-designed website goes further in Reno than it would in San Francisco. Most of the time, you're the only polished option in the running.
02Why It Matters Here

Why web design matters more in Reno than almost anywhere

Reno hospitality serves two audiences at once. Locals decide in groups where Friday night happens. Visitors, whether Tahoe traffic, event crowds, or casino guests, decide from a hotel room with a phone in hand. Both audiences judge you through the same small screen, and both compare you against the best sites they've seen anywhere, not against the restaurant next door. A Bay Area transplant choosing between two Midtown dinner spots brings Bay Area expectations to the choice.

The local baseline is low. Template sites, dead links, menus trapped in PDFs. Which means a well-designed website produces a bigger jump here than the same site would in San Francisco or Los Angeles: you're not fighting fifty polished competitors, you're often the only polished option in the running. That advantage is real and it's temporary. Whoever claims it first becomes the standard everyone else gets compared to.

There's also a practical layer specific to this market. Reno's visitor demand swings with the calendar: Hot August Nights, the Rib Cook-Off, Artown, ski weekends, summer Tahoe overflow. We build sites that flex with those swings. Pages that can carry a seasonal push, event and group-booking paths that don't leak demand to third-party platforms, load speed that survives casino-floor cell service. A template can't do any of that, and a site nobody can update stays frozen in whatever month it launched.

Because we also run SEO and brand programs, our Reno builds are never brochures. Structure, speed, and schema are in from the start, so the site can rank for the searches that matter and hold its own in the AI answers that increasingly replace the results page.

03What Goes Wrong

Buying the template because it's fast

Half of Reno's hospitality sites run on the same handful of themes, and guests can't tell them apart in a tab switch. When the room cost six figures to build, presenting it through a $60 template is a pricing decision. It tells guests where to file you before they've seen the food.

Designing for the owner, not the decision moment

Most local sites bury the three things every guest decision needs, menu, hours, and booking, under autoplay video and origin-story copy. The decision happens in under a minute, on a phone, often in a group chat. We design that minute first and let the storytelling earn its place around it.

Treating the website as finished

Reno runs on seasons and events, but most sites here launch once and fossilize. The menu drifts out of date, the events page still shows last summer, and Google notices the staleness even when guests forgive it. A site needs an owner on the studio side. That's why our builds carry ongoing stewardship instead of a handoff and a goodbye.

04Selected Work

Built here, for here

This is our home market and the work shows it: elevated dining, a Reno recording artist, a northern Nevada resort.

05Why Plume

A studio that competes on craft, based where you are

Made by Plume is run by Denver Miller, a creative director with two decades in luxury hospitality and entertainment. Agency leadership at SK+G in Las Vegas, casino work for brands like MGM Resorts and Borgata, identity systems for resort properties from Arizona to the Gulf Coast. Work at that level usually lives at agencies billing coastal rates to national clients. It lives in Reno because we do.

Local matters beyond convenience. We know a Midtown dinner crowd and a Row casino crowd find you through different doors. We can walk your room before we design the site that represents it, and we're across the table when the launch matters, not across three time zones. National-caliber craft with a local partner's proximity has little competition in this market.

We also build for the long relationship. Most of our Reno work runs on ongoing partnerships covering design, hosting, updates, and search, because a website that keeps winning is one that keeps evolving with the business behind it.

The Full Studio

Web design is one door into the full studio

Most Reno clients don't stop at the website. Brand identity, web design, and SEO run as one connected practice here. The identity gives the site something worth saying, the site gives the search work something worth ranking, and the search work keeps the room full. Start wherever the need is sharpest.

Web Design & Development in Reno, Nevada, without the agency runaround

Custom web design at Made by Plume runs $8,000 to $40,000 depending on scope. A focused site for a single-location restaurant sits at the lower end; multi-page builds with booking integrations, e-commerce, or resort-scale content sit higher. That's more than a template shop and far less than a big agency, and it buys a site designed around your business rather than around a theme. Every quote is fixed-scope, so you know the number before we start.

You can hire nationally, but for hospitality businesses local knowledge does real work. A designer who knows the difference between a Midtown audience and a casino-corridor audience, who can walk your actual space, and who understands Reno's event-driven seasonality will make better decisions at every step. Hire the best designer you can find who knows your market. In Reno, we'd argue that's us, and we're fifteen minutes away.

Most Reno builds run four to ten weeks from kickoff to launch, depending on scope and how quickly content decisions get made. A focused restaurant site moves fastest; larger builds with custom photography, copywriting, and integrations take longer. We work in fixed phases, discovery through launch, so you always know where the project stands. After launch, ongoing stewardship keeps the site current as the business moves.

Every site we build ships with the technical foundation search requires: clean structure, fast load times, schema markup, and content organized around what your guests search for. Ranking itself is never a one-time promise. For clients who want to compete for terms like 'best restaurant in Reno,' or to appear in AI-generated answers, we run ongoing SEO programs on top of the build. The site is the foundation; the ranking work is the campaign.
